Hello from Roberta

 Hello Everyone!  My name is Roberta

I am a grade 5/6/7 teacher.  I also teach English Language Learning, and am a part time teacher librarian (in training)

I live in a small community called Alert Bay BC, it is also known as Cormorant Island and is well known for the "tallest totem pole in the world" and as the "home of the killer whale."  I love my community and am so fortunate to live and teach in the community that I grew up in.  



I recently landed a position as a teacher librarian so am taking LIBE 477B this term.  This is my second course.  I am proud and honoured to be a librarian!  After learning a bit about the role of a teacher librarian I am convinced that all librarians are SUPERHEROES.

That being said, I feel that I have to apologize to my peers and colleagues for getting such a late start on this course.  I know that a major part of the course is to collaborate with each other and I have a lot of catching up to do.  As we all know, life can be such a juggling act and I have dropped the ball.  All I can do is move ahead right?  

So.....here we are.  I am ready and raring to go!  I look forward to catching up and learning more about the incredibly important role that I have acquired.  I love being a librarian so far.  Although my time is very limited I have made the best of the situation and have been rewarded in many ways in my role as a teacher librarian.  

There are many ways in which I can grow and one area I am interested in is becoming a 21st  Century Learner and learning more about STEM and how I can share what I learn with our students.  

We live in a small, isolated community so have  limited access to things that many take for granted.  I look forward to learning how I can teach my students more.

Over the years our school has tried a number of different initiatives to promote reading.  Fostering reading cultures in school is an ongoing challenge for children "who don't like to read."  We have silent reading every day, school wide for 1/2 hour.  Some students enjoy the time, others struggle with reading independently.   One way that we encourage students to read are through computer assisted programs that can read to them like Kurzweil and audio books.  Other ways are to read to them, introduce new books, explore their interests and purchase books that they will get excited about.   https://virl.bc.ca/read-watch-listen/listen/audiobooks/ I have shown the grade K/1/2 class how to "search" for books using our school library site.  This has been a great way to allow students the opportunity to look for books and to find them on the shelf based on the call number and author location.   Students get excited to find books where they are supposed to be and very

LIBE 477 B: Module 6: Developing our Skills, Embracing Lifelong Learning While Inspiring 21st-Century Learners

They say "ignorance is bliss."  Wow!  Before working on this project, I had no idea the vast amount of resources and training that  is available to me.   I am interested in 21st-Century learning and integrating STEM/STEAM into my classroom.  I am honestly overwhelmed at the prospect of "self-initiated" projects.  After getting past the hurdles of living in a remote community with limited resources and the lack of professional  development opportunities I realize there are many ways to improve my skills, explore new learning and make new connections.   Upon searching I have found many useful websites and training opportunities.  First, I would work on utilizing the Spiral Playbook to learn how to lead "with an inquiring mindset in school systems and schools" (Canadians for 21st Century Learning and Innovation, 2017).  As teacher librarians we have the world at our fingertips!  I have learned it is our duty to be with the times and current in order to effectively share the world with others.  Libraries are not only about books and research, libraries are a link to the outside world literally!  We can travel across the world with technology especially lately since we have been reduced to communicating digitally due to Covid-19.  My interest lies in becoming a 21st-Century educator.  This is not an easy feat.  There are many barriers like remoteness, lack of technology, skills, equipment and access to training and professional development.   Many of the barriers can be overcome with the use of technology, willingness and the desire to learn.  I have learned so much over the last term.
